Cairo - A state of cautious anticipation prevails in Doha after the cousins of Qatar Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani have disavowed any connection with the Emir’s actions, and have sent an official apology to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and the Saudi people. Moreover, there is a state of popular resentment at the behavior and actions of the Qatari ruling family, as it has recently shown itself being on very good terms with Iran.

The Qatari Emir is fearing now a coup from the family, which would be the sixth coup following the coup made by his mother Sheikha Moza bint Nasser against his father in 2013, when she forced Hamad to declare Tamim as a ruler of the country. This step was a soft coup, which is a reminiscent of the four previous coups seen in this Arab country.

Political analysts think it is likely we will see a coup in Qatar due to Tamim’s failure to gain a friend to support him. The analysts also say the coup is possible after the disavowal of Tamim’s cousins who are not satisfied with his foreign affairs-related actions, especially the support of terrorism in the region that prompted several neighboring countries to cut ties with Qatar or have tense relations.
Accordingly, the first threat for Tamim is the family of former Qatari Emir, Ahmed bin Ali Al Thani, whose members have the legitimate right to rule Qatar. Ahmed bin Ali is the first Emir of Qatar after its independence from the Great Britain in 1971. The statement issued by the family on June 2, 2017, convoyed a number of messages for the countries of the region, the most important of which is that the Qatari people are dissatisfied with Tamim’s behavior. These messages also mention that the family is preparing to retake power.
The second threat for Tamim is his father Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and his brother Mishaal, who has been excluded by Sheikha Moza from the scene in favor of the current Emir. Hamad is awaiting an opportunity to take revenge from the leaders of the 2013 coup and restore power from the current, hasty Emir who has led Qatar to live in an unprecedented isolation.
