Baghdad – A senior ISIS female fighter and her two sons were killed after unidentified gunmen stormed their house on the outskirts of Hawija in the Iraqi governorate of Kirkuk, a local source said.

The slain fighter, identified as Um Gaber, was the wife of the former leader of ISIS in Diyala, who breathed his last in an airstrike on Hamrin Mountains in 2015, the source, who preferred to be unnamed, told Alsumaria News TV channel.

Dozens of ISIS fighters had fled to Hawija district following the successful liberation of Diyala from ISIS militants in 2015.

The rise of the ISIS group exacerbated a long-running sectarian conflict in Iraq, mostly between the Shi'ite majority and minority Sunnis.

A surge in such violence could undermine efforts by the Iraqi government to dislodge the militants from large swaths of the north and west that they seized in 2014.
