Cairo - Safaa
Hegazy, former Egyptian state TV anchor and head of the Egyptian Radio and
Television Union (ERTU), passed away earlier today, May 28, 2017, after suffering from an ‘unspecified illness’.
Egyptian
journalist Amr El-Leithy mourned her death by saying: “My sincere condolences go out
to [the family of] the great media journalist Safaa Hegazy. She was a great friend and mentor. May God rest her soul in peace and grant her paradise.”
Mustafa
Bakri, Parliamentary member and veteran journalist, also mourned her death saying:
“She was loyal to the ERTU, which she
led at a very critical stage in Egypt's modern history. She was always
concerned about the affairs of the Arab nations as much as concerned about the affairs
of her own home country. She traveled a lot, interviewed several decision-makers
in Egypt and abroad. She kept up and worked, though her body was suffering with agonizing pain; but she never complained.
She possessed a great sense of responsibility and patriotism towards her
country.”
On social
media networks, her fans mourned her death with a hashtag after her name as a
gesture of respect.
