Cairo – The secretary general of the Free Egyptians Party said on Friday that his party has not yet decided whether it will participate in the demonstrations called for by some activists in protest at the parliament’s approval of the maritime border demarcation agreement between Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
“Our party rejects the deal, but we believe that legal and judicial procedures are the best way to protest against the controversial agreement,” Ahmed Samer told Al-Bawaba News.
“The party’s political bureau will convene on Tuesday to take a decision on that score,” he noted, stressing that everybody has the right to protest, even the party’s members, as long as such protests are peaceful.
Egypt's parliament approved in a general session on Wednesday with a majority vote the controversial maritime border demarcation deal that places the Red Sea islands of Tiran and Sanafir in Saudi Arabia's territorial waters, state-run MENA news agency reported.
The general session vote was the final step needed for parliamentary approval of the deal.
The vote came after the legislative and constitutional affairs committee and the national security and defense committee approved the deal on Tuesday and Wednesday.
