Cairo - On the fourth anniversary of the June 30 revolution, it is impossible to forget sacrifices made by Saudi and the UAE rulers in support of Egypt following the overthrow of former president Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
Since the outbreak of the revolution, late Saudi king Abdullah bin Abdel Aziz Al-Saud announced his support for Egyptians’ demands to remove Morsi from power following a one-year rule.
He approved $5 billion in aid to Egypt in desperately needed support for the Egyptian economy.
In his first statement following the June 30 revolution, King Abdullah extended thanks to Egypt’s army commanders for saving Egypt from a “dark tunnel”.
The UAE has been also one of the leading Arab critics of Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood and pledged $3 billion in grants and loans to Egypt's new government.
The UAE aid included a $1 billion grant and a $2 billion no-interest loan.
Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, said the aid showed the UAE’s firm stance in support of Egypt.
The money was aimed at promoting development in Egypt, which has a "pivotal role" in the region, Sheikh Mohammed said.
