Veteran leftist Egyptian politician Refaat El-Said dies at 84

Cairo - Veteran leftist politician and former leader of the Tagammu Party Refaat El-Said passed away at his home in Cairo on Thursday evening at the age of 84, leading Tagammu Party member Hussein Abdel-Razik told Al-Ahram Arabic news website.

Born in October 1932, El-Said's political history goes back to the mid-20th century, when he was a member of the Communist Party before it was dismantled by then-president Gamal Abdel-Nasser.

El-Said was also repeatedly detained in the 1950s, 60s and 70s for his political activities.

He graduated from Ain Shams University in the 1950s.

An academic with two doctoral degrees in modern history, El-Said was a part-time lecturer at the American University in Cairo.

He also wrote several books focusing on Islamist and communist movements in Egypt.

El-Said became the leader of the Tagammu Party in 2005, a post he held until 2013.

In 1995, El-Said was appointed by then-president Hosni Mubarak as an MP in the Shura Council.
