In pictures: A doctoral thesis on media coverage of Egyptian June 30 Revolution

CAIRO — Researcher Hamzeh Al-Sayed Khalil, assistant lecturer at the Department of Educational Media at Tanta University, obtained his PhD degree with distinction after successfully presenting his dissertation titled, 'The Implications of the Portrayal of the June 30 Revolution in Media: An analytical and comparative study of Egyptian and non-Egyptian online media headlines.'
The dissertation was supervised by Dr. Sharif Darwish Al-Labban, Professor of Journalism and Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Information at Cairo University, Dr. Ghada Abdel-Tawab Al-Yamani, Assistant Professor of Journalism and Head of the Media Department at the Faculty of Arts, Tanta University, Dr. Tarek Mahmoud Al-Shorbagi, Radio and Television Instructor, Faculty of Specific Education, Tanta University.
The examining panel consisted of Dr. Mahmoud Hassan Ismail, Professor of Media at the Institute of Higher Studies for Childhood, Ain Shams University, and Dr. Alia Abdel Fattah Ramadan, Assistant Professor of Journalism at the Faculty of Specific Education, Tanta University.

The dissertation deals with the June 30 Revolution as portrayed in the digital press such as news websites and electronic newspapers. The researcher narrowed down the area of his research to only three e-newspapers, which are: Al-Youm7 of Egypt, The New York Times of the USA, and The Guardian of England. The dissertation consists of an introduction and four main chapters, and then concludes with a number of results and recommendations, in addition to several proposals for prospective future research.
On his part, Hamzeh Al-Sayed Khalil said: “The idea of ​​my doctoral thesis was developed and crystallized under the supervision of  my teacher and mentor Dr. Sherif Al-Laban, based on whose vision and insight, I wanted to steer the path of methodical and scholarly research. My doctoral studies were just a continuation of what I had already started in 2012 when I obtained my Master's Degree in a research titled: 'How Egyptian Youth Used Social Media Networks to Trigger the January 25th Revolution.'
