During the demonstrations, Al-Azhar’s Grand Imam Ahmed Al-Tayeb
called upon all Egyptians to hold onto their unity, stressing the need for not
giving the chance of malicious group to drive them apart. Al-Tayeb warned against any attempts to
raise tensions among Egyptians, saying that "dividing us will only lead disasters - God forbid."
Al-Azhar’s Grand Imam called upon different parties to work together and take serious steps to diffuse the current political, social and economic crises. He expressed his
appreciation to the stamina of Egyptian people who rallied in the streets to express their
opinion in civilized manner.
Al-Tayeb was one of the major figures who participated in July 3 Declaration with leaders of Egypt’s Defense Ministry and a range of political figures. He also delivered a speech during the press conference held by then-Defense-Minister-turned-president Abdel Fattah El-Sisi; when El-Sisi declared the ousting of Muslim Brotherhood’s President Mohamed Morsi.
At his speech before the assembly, Al-Tayeb expressed full support for the will of Egyptians, calling upon all Egyptians, Muslims and Christians, to celebrate their victories and unity in order to overcome any challenges ahead of them. He concluded by saying that Egypt’s Al-Azhar aspires to be part of re-engineering a post-revolutionary and democratic Egypt; an Egypt for everyone.
